[SBB] more Willow Flycatchers and a Golden-crowned Sparrow

Last night I walked south along the Alamitos Creek trail to Pfeiffer Ranch Rd. Ct and back to the Mazzone bridge. It was very poor birding but I stepped off the trail at one point and found another Willow Flycatcher, flycatching from a small bare tree on the creek bank. This flycatcher was similar to the one I found Sunday near the Mazzone bridge. The coloring was gray with a darker crest. A pale gray streaked vest extended over the flanks and it had less of a yellow tinge to its breast and belly. A white chin and throat and  collar line was noted. Again no calls were heard and I was very close to this bird.

This morning 8-28-06 I met Sue Van Stee on the Alamitos Creek trail. We got a late start due to persistent low clouds, and birded to the lake and back for an hour. Another Willow Flycatcher was found just south of the pedestrian bridge from the lake. This WIFL was nearly textbook perfect, long billed, tan wingbars, with brownish/green back and tail. We also saw several Western Tanagers and Yellow Warblers. The Spotted Sandpiper was near the gravel island at Almaden Lake. Sue left and I went back to the south west corner of the Mazzone bridge. Five Nutmeg Mannikins which seem to frequent this area, flew into a pine tree across Guadalupe Creek. I've seen them bring grass into a nearby Pepper Tree. Four W. Tanagers were feeding on grapes vines on the chain link fence. A Golden crowned-Sparrow repeated its oh-dear-me song five times. I was unable to locate the sparrow on the Mazzone property. A Belted Kingfisher male flew past as I was leaving. I walked across the street and along Crossview Drive. When I checked a Sycamore tree hollow at the end of the street a Barn Owl looked back at me. Many times I've checked these trees so this was a nice surprise.
