South Bay Birders,
This morning (27 Aug), two of my daughters and I started at Sunnyvale
Baylands Park, where we had 25+ Yellow, 5 Wilson's, and 6 Orange-crowned
Warblers, 4 Pacific-slope Flycatchers, and a Bullock's Oriole. After a stop
at State and Spreckles in Alviso (which produced 2 juv. Baird's Sandpipers
and a Snowy Plover), we went to the Sunnyvale WPCP, where 2 Black Skimmers
were among 60 or more Forster's Terns on the levees past the radar station.
We ended the day at the Radio Road ponds in Redwood Shores (San Mateo Co.),
where Matthew Dodder kindly pointed out a basic Red Phalarope, a good find
(both Wilson's and Red-necked were also in the ponds here). At least 25
Elegant Terns and 8 Black Skimmers were among 225+ Forster's, but I could
find no other terns (e.g., Least or Common) here. A Black Turnstone, 4
Lesser Yellowlegs, 22 Greater Yellowlegs, 340 Willets, and 285 Marbled
Godwits were among the many shorebirds roosting in the pond at high tide.
Late broods of unfledged young included one of Black-necked Stilt, four of
Mallard, and singles of Gadwall and Northern Pintail.
