Perhaps 3600+ peeps were roosting in New Chicago Marsh
today, 20 Aug 06, mostly juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPERS.
My count of LESSER YELLOWLEGS this day was 14, with 11
of them being juveniles. Well out along the spur of
the railroad tracks I had 21 RED-NECKED and 7 WILSON'S
PHALAROPES. A juvenile SNOWY PLOVER was also in this
area, while an adult female was off the boardwalk near
the EEC building. The pond at State and Spreckles had
an interesting WILLET that was very pale, having an
almost white head and neck, and generally paler than
normal in all other areas.
Also, yesterday I forgot to mention a raggedy-looking
HOUSE WREN that was out at the mouth of STEVENS CREEK,
lurking in the undergrowth at the refuge gate there.
Fall landbird migration is evidently underway, and was
highlighted for me last week on Wednesday when I had 2
female/immature WESTERN TANAGERS out on Bald Mountain
in Sierra Azul OSP.
