[SBB] MacGillivrays Warbler

I met Freddy Howells group from the Wild Bird Center today Aug. 19 at Santa Clara Valley Water District headquarters on Almaden Ex. We birded around the pond which was quiet but saw 4 Vaux's Swifts in with a variety of swallows. Two juv. Brown Headed Cowbirds were feeding in the grass with an adult male BHCB on the east side. ( I posted this previously but got no comments.) A Spotted Sandpiper was working the spillway. Just a few weeks ago it was quite spotted. A large Western Pond Turtle was sunning himself on the far bank and many juv. Green Herons were seen along the river. An Am. Kestrel flew over the group and perched in a Sycamore and devoured a small bird. I've seen this male kestrel before and he seems unusually small.

We birded along the gravel road which is accessed from the north east corner of the property. Here we saw many f. and juv. Hooded Orioles eating berries and wild grapes. Everyone got a nice look at two Nutmeg Mannikins perched nearby. As we neared a clump of trees by an overflow area, I heard an unusual loud dry chip call and found a MacGillivrays Warbler in a willow tree. I noted its distinctive white eye arcs, grayish head and yellow belly. The group had to leave and while I was chipping for the MacGillivrays to return an Orange crowned Warbler flew in. On the way out I heard another unusual call and found a white and pale blue parakeet in a willow.  I'll post that sighting on Craigslist lost and found. As I watched a small frog hopping across the water, a Belted Kingfisher made a strike but came up empty.
