[SBB] New Chicago Marsh

Folks:

This morning, 8/15/06, I walked out the RR tracks at the New Chicago
Marsh in Alviso (but this was not a birding trip, of course). There
were few changes from recent weeks. I had a total of 6 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS including 1 juvenile. I counted only 6 WILSON'S
PHALAROPES, which is down, but they tend to leave earlier than the
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES (only 13). At the track junction I counted 4
SNOWY PLOVER in the dry pond north of Alviso Marina CP. At one
point, the BROWN PELICANS in the closed Alviso salt ponds to the west
raised up and I counted at least 38, but there are many more pelicans
in there, I believe (I think the survey there on 7/30 had 62). There
are lots of juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPERS now in their fresh and lovely
plumage. At least two BURROWING OWLS were on the dry hummock in the marsh.

I also ran into Roland Kenner, Pat Kenny, and Kathy Parker and we all
agreed it was a beautiful morning, even if the birding gods were
being stingy. Maybe they did better after I left.
