[SBB] McClellan Ranch Report

Hi all:

Late breeding success continues at the ranch. A covey
of California Quail have been the most entertaining
with 9 tiny quail chicks running around the ranch
house last Friday.

Two weeks ago, a Bullock's Oriole fledgeling left the
nest, and today I witnessed a female Bullock's
bringing food to a second nest in close proximity to
the previous one. This nest is so well hidden that i
couldn't see the hatchling, so I can't verify that
it's not a cowbird. yet.

Yesterday (Wed. 8/09) a Hooded Oriole fledgeling was
on the ground betw. bushes adjacent to the Ranch
House, and being watched over attentively by a female
Hooded Oriole.

I haven't seen a male Bullock's in many weeks, but the
male Hooded Oriole comes to our hummingbird (Oriole)
feeder quite regularly.

A Western Wood-peewee feeding a fledgeling on a branch
(the actual food was probably an insect, not a branch)
rounded out the days adventure.

Band-tailed Pigeons roost on the property and can be
typically found during a ranch walk, for those who
don't want to head to the mountains. And I'm always
looking for an excuse to go for a walk.

Good birding,

Bob Power
