All,
This morning as Frank Vanslager and I checked out the Sunnyvale Water
Treatment Facility we found a juvenile BLACK TERN on the
small island in the northeastern corner of the West Pond. As
we alternately photographed the BLTE as it rested on the island and
observed it as it fed low over there water (often being harassed
by Swallows) Mike Mammoser arrived to join in the fun. A few
minutes later Mike pointed out a basic plumaged COMMON
TERN (our target bird for the day) resting just a few feet away from
the Black Tern. We also had our first of the year juvenile WESTERN
SANDPIPER on this seemingly undeserving, tiny piece, of real estate on
the edge of a large pond. Frank and I also had an alternate plumaged
BONAPARTE'S GULL in the East Pond as well as
WILSON'S PHALAROPES and at least one RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE (initially seen with one WIPH). I should also point out
that when Frank and I first arrived in the parking lot that Swallows and
Blackbirds seemed to cover hillside west of the parking lot. Later
Frank and I went to New Chicago Marsh where the best birds seen were a couple
more juvenile Western Sandpipers
Take care,
Bob Reiling
