[SBB] Arastradero Preserve

I spent a few hours at Arastradero today hiking past Arastradero Lake and up to the (second) pond and back.  It was a gray afternoon with only very light showers.

I had my first-of-the-season (FOS) heard only CASSINS VIREO, and FOS HUTTONS VIREO, both near the trail before you get to the concrete bridge that crosses the creek.  Along the route were many ORANGE CROWNED WARBLERS, GOLDEN CROWNED SPARROWS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and BUSHTITS.  A young CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE was begging its parent for food.

It was a fairly good raptor day with KESTREL, WHITE-TAILED KITE, COOPERS HAWK, RED-SHOULDERED and RED-TAILED HAWKS.  A pair of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were perched on tall stalks in the uphill field just northeast of the concrete bridge.

There was nothing but a couple AMERICAN COOTS at Arastradero Lake; the (second) pond had a single female COMMON GOLDENEYE along with a coot.  Also near the (second) pond were a couple BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHERS.  The (second) pond was so high that the bullfrogs were sitting right on the edge of the trail--several of them, in fact.  Odd site to see.  In the woodpecker department I saw NUTTALLS, ACORN, NORTHERN FLICKER, DOWNY, and HAIRY.
