All: Today, Monday, March 27, at about 11 AM a flock of more than 25 Black Skimmers flew in and made multiple passes at the “Skimmer Island” in Charleston Slough. Those large birds scared up a huge number of shorebirds from the island, leading to a wild fly-a-round. Several times I counted at least 25 BLSKs before the confused flying messed up my count. There seemed to be some immatures in the flock, but I only had my binos, since I was just bicycling around. A strong wind from the south may blow in some strays; it certainly made the bicycling more difficult in spots. Frank Vanslager |
