West of Morgan Hill:
I had a steller's jay in my tree early this
morning performing a very good mimic of a red-shouldered hawk. I also have
a large flock, twenty or more, of band-tailed pigeons who are regularly feasting
on my chickens' hen scratch. The flock was two or three birds a couple
of weeks ago and is growing daily. Also this morning, on Uvas Road,
near the Calero ranger entrance, there was a flock of about 15 wild turkeys,
with several males displaying. The barn swallows returned this weekend, a full
week later than any year in the last 10 or so.
