A dear friend of mine had a birthday yesterday. She had never seen a live
owl in its habitat, so I promised her one. We went to the Jubilee Christian
Church parking lot in Alviso in the late afternoon (4:00). Much to my
relief and her joy, there were two BURROWING OWLS, busy guarding their
burrow, swivelling their heads, and preening for their crepuscular
activities. For me the biggest excitement consisted of four BARN SWALLOWS,
my FOY, that flew by, going west, at about 4:30. Two TURKEY VULTURES landed
near us to take a drink of water from the flooded field. Also had a dozen
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, six RING-NECKED PHEASANTS, and a large flock of CANADA
GEESE (no Cacklers were seen), in addition to expected Blackbirds, Phoebe,
Mallards, etc.
