I birded along the Alamitos Creek trail today. A male Wilson's Warbler
was singing from the creek bank near the pedestrian bridge. Further
south a House Wren was investigating a small cavity in a Sycamore
tree. A flock of 45 Cedar Waxwings were seen flying high. A noisy pair of
Red shouldered Hawks swooped low over a Red tailed Hawk perched in a
small tree near the trail. A Sharp shinned Hawk was flying in circles
overhead and a f. Kestrel was seen kiting. Hairy, Acorn, several Downy
and many Nuttalls Woodpeckers were also seen.
Today two female Downy Woodpeckers were exhibiting behavior I've witness
before. They noisily chase each other, then land a foot apart facing each
other. Their tails are fanned out as they bob their heads back and forth
in a threatening manner, then fly off and repeat the sequence. Todays
females were near a Downy's nesting cavity I discovered years ago and is
south of the Camden entrance.
Three pair of Common Mergansers were seen at various locations along the
creek. A Bewicks Wren was seen building a nest in a nest box along the
equestrian trail. I'm keeping an eye on a m. Belted Kingfisher which has
been seen in the same area for several weeks. A Cal. Thrasher and Wrentit
in the sagebrush hillside were heard only. Three Hermit Thrush were seen
along the trail near the underbrush.
A male Rufous Hummingbird that visited my backyard feeder on Sunday has
not been seen again.
