Yesterday afternoon, before I left work, I checked out the Raven's nest located on a power line/cell tower off of Hellyer ave. In San Jose. There was something on the nest. With my bins I checked it out and it turned out to be a Red-tailed Hawk standing on the nest! No sign of the Ravens. This morning, 6:30 a.m., I checked the nest again. This time the Ravens were harassing a Red-tailed Hawk standing on their nest, they eventually drove the Red-tail off. This afternoon, 3:30 p.m., one Raven was on the nest the other was perched not far from the nest. The power line towers in this area are the territory of several Red-tailed Hawks. I've even seen them drive off Golden Eagles that happen to be passing thru. It will be interesting to see if the Ravens can successfully rear young under these conditions. Bob Juhl |
