On Saturday, 18 Mar 06, I stopped at the Sunnyvale Sewage Ponds, taking a
walk around the old landfill. Along the north side of the landfill a
BURROWING OWL was doing its best to keep an eye on me, while tucking down as
far as possible in its hole. A SAY'S PHOEBE was at the northern-most point
of the landfill, where it borders the Lockheed Ponds. At the western corner
2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were in the coyote brush (which has taken over the
fennel patch). These birds are undoubtedly migrants.
At the EEC a couple more BURROWING OWLS were in New Chicago Marsh, just
south of the boardwalk. An AMERICAN PIPIT was on the levee where the
boardwalk ends, molting into its buffy breast coloration.
At Arzino Ranch another BURROWING OWL was evident. An immature GOLDEN EAGLE
was perched on a light pole along Nortech Parkway. It flew out over the
adjacent field to hunt, where it was mobbed by a pair of AMERICAN CROWS. It
was quite oblivious to their efforts, not even flinching as they swooped by.
