[SBB] A walk in Arastradero Preserve

I used to bicycle past Palo Alto's Arastradero Preserve to climb into the
Santa Cruz Mountains every Saturday, never suspecting the birds and
wildlife nearby. I took a short walk there Saturday, March 17.

I saw all the raptors previously reported here: a juvenile Cooper's hawk
hunting just south of Arasteradero Road and west of the parking lot, an
American kestrel kiting over the hills south of the road (both seen from
Meadowlark trail), red-tailed hawks soaring north of the road and parking
lot, a white-tailed kite hunting lower down in the same airspace, a
northern flicker who flew across the road to avoid the Cooper's hawk.

There were also rock doves preening and roosting on a dead tree south of
the road. At one point a group of four Anna's hummingbirds whipped by. I
heard the broken-accordion calls of several acorn woodpeckers, but didn't
see any.

Some golden-crowned sparrows foraged on the ground near the start of the
Corte Madera trail south of Arastradero Road.
