All,
I stopped by Stevens Creek between L'Avenida and Crittenden Lane on the
way into work this morning 9/12/05. Bird numbers were up a bit, and I
found 1 WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, 4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS (2 together with the
WWPE at the end of L'Avenida and 2 more together just south of the lone
eucalyptus), 2 "WESTERN" FLYCATCHERS, 1 WARBLING VIREO, 11+ YELLOW
WARBLERS (most in or near the lone eucalyptus), 1 MYRTLE YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER (at the end of L'Avenida), an immature/female MACGILLIVRAY'S
WARBLER (in a blackberry bramble about 50 yards south of the lone
eucalyptus), 5 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, and 1
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were numerous, including
several begging fledglings.
There may be more than one MGWA along this stretch. The bird I saw on 6
Sep was singing a weak, poorly phased song but lacked a strong gray hood
from behind, suggesting an immature male to me (Orange-crowned Warblers
have also been singing weak songs along here lately as well). I got more
extensive looks at today's bird, and it is definitely not an adult male.
Thus if Kathy Parker's "male" was an adult male there are/have been at
least two MGWA here.
Today I first heard the MGWA from the lower path on the east side of the
creek, but did not see it until I was heading back south on the lower
path on the west side of the creek. It is a skulker and takes some
patience/luck to see.
Al Eisner reported a second (singing) WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE up near
Crittenden Lane, along with a singing HOUSE WREN.
