[SBB] Henry Coe SP - 9/11/05

All,

Today 9/11/05, I took advantage of the cool weather and took 2 of the kids on a 10-mile, 2000-foot elevation hike from the Hunting Hollow entrance of Henry Coe State Park. We headed up the Lyman Willson Ridge Trail to the Bowl Trail to Willson Camp, then down Wagon Road to the Phegley Ridge Road, and back in Hunting Hollow, finishing the loop in just under 4 hours (11:10am to 3:05pm).

In general there were few birds in this dried out part of the Diablo Range, but we did find a CANYON WREN in the drainage at Willson Camp and had a GOLDEN EAGLE along Lyman Willson Ridge. Also of interest were 2 SAY'S PHOEBES, one along the Bowl Trail southwest of Willson Camp and the other southeast of Willson Camp at the Wagon Road junction (both at about 2070 feet elevation). We have no breeding records from block 4000, so these birds may be early returning winter birds or post-breeding dispersants. A NORTHERN HARRIER flying west just south of Willson Camp was also of interest, as was a WHITE-TAILED KITE in the drainage just north of the camp.

Other birds included: Mallard-8 (pond below Bowl Trail), Turkey Vulture, Sharp-shinned Hawk (where Wagon Road crosses Coon Hunter's Gulch), Red-shouldered Hawk-2 (near the windmill in Hunting Hollow and near Redfern Pond), Red-tailed Hawk (several, including juveniles), American Kestrel, California Quail (including juveniles not yet fully grown), Mourning Dove, hummingbird sp.-1, Acorn Woodpecker, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Black Phoebe, Steller's Jay, Western Scrub-Jay, Oak Titmouse, Bushtit, White-breasted Nuthatch, Bewick's Wren, Wrentit-1, Hutton's Vireo-4, Spotted Towhee, California Towhee, and Dark-eyed Junco. Also thought I heard a House Finch from Redfern Pond, had a flyby sparrow along the Bowl Trail (have had Grasshopper Sparrow here in the past), and a possible Orange-crowned Warbler.
