I drove around the south county looking for birds today. An adult GOLDEN EAGLE was perched on a power tower at McKean and Schillingsburg. Eight YELLOW BILLED MAGPIES were seen along McKean at Casa Loma Rd.
I drove over to the Almaden Reservoir for the first time all summer. I parked on Hicks Rd and walked down on the mud flats, where I found a pair of BELTED KINGFISHERS, and 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. That end of the reservoir was full of bullfrogs with their green heads sticking out of the water. I counted at least 50 of various sizes in the shallow water. They sure were cute.
Walking along Alamitos Rd. I heard a loud chirping and looked straight up to find a juvenile OSPREY perched on top of a telephone pole eating its prey. It appeared smaller than any I'd seen before. It had a bit of rufous color behind its dark eye patch. It's dark feathers were outlined with white, giving them a scaled look. It was a stunning fresh looking Osprey.
Four WOOD DUCK pairs and 3 males were also seen on the reservoir. I parked near the dam on the way home and found another pair of WODU and 3 juv. males sitting together on the bank. Another SPOTTED SANDPIPER and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen nearby.
