Folks:
This morning, 9/9/2005, I made stops at Matadero Creek below Hwy 101 and
the Palo Alto Baylands in the vicinity of the ranger building.
Matadero Creek was very quiet with the only migrant identified being a
PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER. An adult GREEN HERON flew in and was
delightfully noisy.
At the Baylands, the fennel patch had 2 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS (my 1st for fall), 3 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW
(another 1st for me). Otherwise, it was nearly as quiet as Matadero. I
watched an adult SNOWY EGRET feed two fledglings at the palm heronry and an
adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON feed a single fledgling in the
myoporum--both are late records. They may be a week or two from completely
abandoning the heronry.
