[SBB] Buff-breasted Sandpiper continues, SW corner of Salt Pond A16

All,

The BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was well seen again this morning in the
southwest corner of the Environmental Education Center Salt Pond (A16). The massive
amount of "Nat's" on the dike (resembling a 30-40 foot high wall a couple
hundred feet in length this morning) seem to assure the birds continued
presence, at least in the short term. A recommendation to those who have not seen
the BBSA; As you approach the SW corner of the pond, walk slowly paying
particular attention to groups of peeps on the dike (they're also feeding on the
Nats). As you slowly approach the peeps they will become agitated and the BBSA,
if it's feeding in the area, will come up on the dike to see what's
happening. The BBSA will normally be 60 to 100 feet away (it doesn't like people to
be any closer) and on the "outside" edge of the dike. When the BBSA feels
secure it will start to feed on the insects that are on the plants. It will
then slowly work it's way down the dike and out of sight as it feeds. Please
don't pursue the bird, if it's up on top of the dike you're too close. This
bird is very wary and I'm sure that it would be easy to chase it away, for
good, depriving others of any opportunity to see this great bird (it gets enough
harassment from hikers, bikers and trains, please don't add to the list).

Take care,
Bob Reiling
