Hi All,
After seeing the BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER and other goodies at Sunnyvale
Baylands I headed over to CCFS to look for the singing Plumbeous Vireo.
Thanks to Mike Rogers for stopping back at Sunnyvale Baylands to let those
of us remaining know about the action at CCFS. When I got to the location
all was quite. After about a hour and a quarter I found the now silent
PLUMBEOUS VIREO in a cottonwood tree, on the creekside of the trail, about
130 feet south of net 9655. The bird seemed to be foraging and presented
himself for a good look only briefly at 3:45. The white spectacled look
really stood out in the shadows of the folage.
Some directions for those who have access and are a little familiar with
the area. For quick and easy access park off the lower road at the south
end of the revegetation area (south of trailer). The reveg area tapers to
a point here as easily seen from the main road. Follow the wide path across
the overflow channel toward the creek and then bear left (north) to pickup
the foot path into the riparian area. Net 9655 will be found shortly after
the trail turns north.
The CCFS area has been rich in raptors. On the way out I stopped to scope
a COOPER'S HAWK (juv). A MERLIN came in and perched in the same leafless
tree about 15 feet above the Coop's. After a minute of tension (mine!) the
Merlin glided off but came back, buzzing the Coop's a couple of times
causing it to duck down. The Merlin is a largish female and looks like the
one I saw yesterday consuming a bird.
