The Santa Clara County Water District has performed some dredging operations
along San Tomas Aquino Creek north of Agnew Rd in Santa Clara. This has left
this area an open shallow muddy course, with little room for things to hide.
Yesterday afternoon I had a WILSON'S SNIPE probing the mud amongst a flock
of MALLARDS in this stretch of the creek. This morning a GREATER YELLOWLEGS
had joined the snipe, bobbing about as it is wont to do, while GREAT and
SNOWY EGRETS stalked the shallows for the hapless. A EUROPEAN STARLING
called out from the eucalyptus trees bordering the parking lot, giving a
perfect rendition of the "mad cat" call of a Tricolored Blackbird.
Presently, an AMERICAN BITTERN came flying by, low over the channel, before
bending across the path and settling into the pond on the Great America side
of the fence. Here, a couple of GREEN HERONS chased each other about along
the periphery of the pond, before disappearing into the vegetation
themselves. A DOWNY WOODPECKER drummed on a wooden power pole adjacent to
the trail, while 3 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS circled lazily overhead.
