[SBB] Brewer's Sparrow and Common Poorwill

SBBers,

In the late afternoon of 09/30/05 Dean Manley and I met up with Janna Pauser to refind the BREWER'S SPARROW she saw along the Guadalupe River Trail this morning. Shortly after we reached the drainage area lined with large granite rocks it popped into view. It was quite cooperative staying in view several minutes at a time. We had great binocular looks from about 20 feet. Also in the area was a LINCOLN'S and a SONG SPARROW. Janna had mentioned in her report that she was concerned about a cat lurking in the area getting the sparrows. The Brewer's Sparrow was missing its tail. We were wondering if something took its tail or if the sparrow molted all of its tail feathers. Would someone enlighten us? This was a lifer for Dean and my best look at a Brewer's. Thanks, Janna!

After studying the sparrow we went over to Almaden Quicksilver. We walked in from McAbee along the Senador Mines Trail about 3/4 mile. We saw a COMMON POORWILL briefly on the trail and two or three flew across the trail. They called for about 10 minutes. In the same area we heard 2 or more WESTERN SCREECH-OWLs. During our return we heard several more.
