At Palo Alto's Arastradero Preserve, our first Thanksgiving treat was a
Wild Turkey wandering alongside and on the road, literally stopping traffic
and delighting the families walking by. Pete LaTourette was also there, and
we wondered about how smart this bird was. A woman passing by said someone
in the area raised turkeys, so we figured that explained why it was so
tame. Fortunately for the bird, it soon wandered down the road and into bushes.
Later, we saw a nature documentary scene in which a White-tailed Kite was
repeatedly swooping down on a Cooper's Hawk that had made the mistake of
landing on the kite's favorite perch. After the kite gave the hawk what-for
over a couple of minutes, both flew off over the hill.
Enjoy the December holidays and remember to join the Christmas Bird Count
in your area. Call Audubon at 408-252-3747 if you need information.
