At 11 a.m. Thursday, I saw a flock of 40+ buffleheads on the
pond by the west abutment of the Dumbarton Bridge on the north
side of Hwy 84. I cross the Dumbarton almost every day. This
is the first good-sized flock I've seen there this year.
Meanwhile, on the ponds along the causeway on the east
side of the bridge, the numbers of eared grebe continue to
grow. There are hundreds of grebe in there now. If this year
follows form, there will be thousands of them in there
within a few weeks.
Most of the grebes can be found on the ponds on the
north side of the causeway. Unfortunately, stopping is not
allowed aong that stretch of highway, so gaining access to
them is difficult.
Best bet is to enter the Don Edwards NWR off Paseo Padre
Parkway. Drive along the frontage road on the south side of
Hwy 84. (Sometimes smaller flocks of grebe cross over to the
ponds on the south side of the causeway.) If you park at
the east abutment, you can walk beneath the bridge to the
dikes along the pond on the north side of the Hwy 84
causeway.
