Your story reminds me of the time I had a class out at
Charleston Slough. We were checking out all the birds
in the slough when out of nowhere a male Northern
Harrier flew down and grabbed one of two Greater
Yellowlegs.
It was clearly a Greater Yellowlegs. If you had any
double all you had to do was listen to it screaming,
"tew tew tew - tew tew tew" as the raptor lifted it
away. We could also see the long, yellow legs kicking
to no avail.
We all stood there looking into the slough feeling,
well, grossed-out to tell you the truth. We also
started to empathize with the remaining Greater
Yellowlegs because it just lost its buddy.
But before you could feel too bad BLAMO - the Northern
Harrier came back and grabbed the second yellowlegs!
There were lots of birds on the sandbar that morning
and the harrier went for those two birds. I guess he
had a hankering for yellowlegs.
Happy Holidays -
