All,
Birding was fairly slow at Sunnyvale Baylands this morning so Frank
Vanslager and I checked out Sierra Rd (finishing up on Mertcalf Rd). On the way up
Sierra Rd, we had among other species, lots of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, LARK
SPARROW, YELLOW-BILLED MAGPIE, a male HAIRY WOODPECKER and AMERICAN PIPIT. At the
top of Sierra Rd (near the corral) I had a ROCK WREN with an unusually long
bill (unfortunately Frank was unable to see this bird as it quickly dropped out
of sight). Further on Frank had a GOLDEN EAGLE while just past #5000 Sierra
Rd we had a SAY'S PHOEBE, BEWICK'S WREN and RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW. At the
large cattle pond on Metcalf Rd along with MALLARD, GADWALL and AMERICAN
WIGEON we had a solo male BUFFLEHEAD. A final quick stop at New Chicago Marsh
failed to produce any birds of note.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
