This morning (Tues, Nov 1) a large flock of over 500 Canada Geese was at the
upper end of Calero Reservoir. With this flock were one juvenile GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and 14 CACKLING GEESE (9 minima-type and 4 Aleutian-type).
A word on this large Canada Goose flock. Beginning in late August large
numbers of Canada Geese often show up from their home base, which I believe is
San Felipe Lake. The geese will spend the day at the upper end mudflats of
Calero Reservoir and then return home by evening. They do not spend the night
at Calero Reservoir. Sometimes the geese don't show up at Calero Reservoir at
all - I guess depending on their plans for the day. This can be a bit of a
disappointment, and I've come up short-handed a number of times. I mention
this so birders will not be unduly disappointed if they visit the reservoir,
and no geese. Right now, the geese have been pretty consistent in showing up
for the past couple of weeks.
Some other birds worth mentioning at the upper end today were sixteen COMMON
MERGANSERS, one PRAIRIE FALCON, four WILSON'S SNIPE, and at least six
AMERICAN PIPITS.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was in the oaks along the road leading to the
levee, and at least twenty TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS were with mixed blackbird flocks
of Red-winged and Brewer's Blackbirds.
Good birding -
