Monday 5/16 Phyllis Swanson, Peggy Don and I birded Del Puerto Canyon.
At MM0.1 we saw GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, WESTERN MEADOW LARK and CLIFF
SWALLOW. At MM0.6, the first cattle guard, we saw a female BLUE GROSBEAK
and HORNED LARK. At MM0.9 was the first of many WESTERN KINGBIRD's and
a family of 4 LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. One fledgling had a meaty morsel
impaled on the barbed-wire fence. Across the road a COMON RAVEN stole
lunch from 2 juvenile RED-TAILED HAWKS. At MM2.5 we saw another family
of 3 shrikes. MM3.3 we saw 2 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, SWAINSON'S
THRUSH, BULLOCKS ORIOLE and ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in the Tabacco Trees. A
MM3.5 were BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK and a quick glimpse of a ROADRUNNER as
it flew in and landed behind a rock on the hillside. Owl Rock (MM3.7)
was a busy place. We observed an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER stealing Owl
pellets. It was breaking them apart and taking some fluffy stuff away,
we assume for nesting material. Other birds in the area were OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, LAZULI BUNTING and BLACK PHOEBE.A RUFUS-CROWNED SPARROW. WE
did not see a Costa's Hummingbird in the Tobacco Trees. At MM4.0 and
YELLOW-BILLED MAGPIE at MM4.4. AT MM4.8 were 3 LARK SPARROWS, WESTERN
BLUEBIRD, CA. TOWHEE, 2 WESTERN WOOD PEEWEE, SAYS PHOEBE. Our first
BREWERS BLACKBIRD at MM5.4. We got lucky at MM5.5 when we saw a PRAIRIE
FALCON in a dead tree near the creek. It took off as we got out of the
car and we got a nice view as it flew above us in the canyon. We missed
the Wrens andarrived at Raines Park for a nice lunch break then looked
around and found WESTERN TANAGER, KILDEER, NUTTLES and ACORN WOODPECKER.
We tried to find the Chat, but no luck. We stpped at the big pond and
saw VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS, GREAT BLUE HERON, COMMON MERGANSER, COOT,
PIED_BILLED GREBE, Lazuli Bunting, Black-headed Grosbeak. No
Woodducks.Next notable stop was San Antonio Valley where we saw the
LEWIS's WOODPECKER. Back to the firestation we saw LAWRENCE"S GOLDFINCH,
more Bullocks Orioles, W. B;uebirds, LESSER GOLDFINCH, OAK TITMOUSE,
more Kingbirds, Bluebirds. severl W. Wood Peewees, and a Bobcat. On the
way home a Roadrunner flew in front of the car on Mines Rd at MM15.
A great day of birding!
Summer Brasuel
