[SBB] Selasphorus spp.

Mike Rogers reminds me that my claim of an "obvious" Allen's among those at Foothills the other day is unlikely given the very difficult ID issues involved with female Selasphorus; that's completely true and I am guilty of being lazy in my thinking on that (it just seemed so much like the ones making themselves comfortable in my Pescadero garden...).

I returned to the spot where I'd seen the individual in question yesterday 5/10/2005 to see if I could in fact make some progress on the ID. There was an individual Selasphorus there, all right, but once it emerged from cover it zipped past too fast to make even a sure gender ID. (There was also a singing Hermit Warbler in the picnic area.)

But while we're on the topic: This year, doesn't there seem to be an extraordinary number of individuals representing this genus, spread over an unusually broad area?
