Yesterday at noon time I met a friend at the Stanford cactus garden. As we
approached we heard very loud calls from two male Bullock's Orioles. They
were chasing each other around the tree tops and performing this fabulous
downward spiraling twisting chase, chattering all the while. While
performing this chase a female arrived to watch and then shortly flew off in
the direction from which she had arrived. The males chased each other for a
good 5 minutes while we watched in utter amazement. Who needs Cirque de
Soleil when such wonders exist outside?
The cactus are covered in buds and many are in bloom. A truly fabulous
display and the Anna Hummingbirds love it. The Cactus Garden is near the
mausoleum off of Palm and Campus Drive. Public parking can be found in
front of the museum and then one can walk across Campus Drive West to get to
the mausoleum. The cactus garden is to the left of the mausoleum.
As we left after a walk around the Arboretum the male Oriole called
repeatedly from the tree tops for us to "look up here".
