Hi SBBers,
I stopped by Alum Rock Park to check in on the very popular Great Horned
Owl nestlings today. These are the ones near the last parking lot. To
late, they are gone. I assume they have successfully fledged between 3:30
this Tuesday afternoon and when last reported seen on Saturday.
No worries. There is another, perhaps less well known, nest site on Alum
Rock itself. I saw 3 GREAT HORNED OWLs there today. One adult and two very
large owlets. My guess is that these owlets are only a week or so younger
than the others.
I had a singing BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK at the YSI but other birds were the
normal residents.
Some directions to the owls for the unfamiliar who are interested. Park in
the upper end (past the rest rooms) of the Rustic Parklands parking lot.
Cross the road and take Penitencia Creek Trail to the right (uphill) to the
overcrossing bridge. Stop at the steel pole and look up at the face of
Alum Rock. On the upper right edge of the rock projection is a lone dark
green woody shrub or small tree. Putting the center of an imaginary clock
face on the tree, draw an imaginary line to the 7:30 position where the
edge of the rock meets the grassy hillside. A little less than 2/3s of the
way down that line from the tree is the nest ledge. Hope this is not to
complicated but the owls are not hard to find due to their size.
Dean Manley
