All,
This morning Pat Kenny, Roland Kenner, Frank Vanslager and I birded Mt
Umunhum Rd and the trail leading to Bald Mountain. Incomplete head markings on a
male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, the first bird of the day, caused some excitement
until the color and shape of the gorget could be determined. Otherwise things
seemed fairly slow with singing CALIFORNIA THRASHER, both TOWHEES, both JAYS,
AMERICAN ROBIN, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, an interacting
pair of [male and female] TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, at least four WESTERN TANAGERS
(three males, all four together), ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, BEWICK'S WREN, WRENTIT, PURPLE FINCH, WARBLING VIREO, HUTTON'S VIREO and
at least three fly overs of two BAND-TAILED PIGEONS each. We had a bit more
excitement when a bright red Finch, initially thought to be a Purple Finch,
was heard singing an unrecognized song and was then found to have streaked
undertail coverts. Unfortunately the flanks seemed a bit heavily streaked while
the bill seemed too short [with a definitely curved tip] to be that of a
Cassin's Finch so we ticked off another HOUSE FINCH. Later we had an adult
GOLDEN EAGLE perched on the top of a tall antenna on a beige bldg. atop the
mountain [near a fire lookout tower]. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers higher up on Mt
Umunhum Rd were heard to sing a song that we don't normally associate with then
(second bird of the day to do so). A walk down the trail to Almaden
Quicksilver from the other side of Hicks Road added BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK and OAK
TITMOUSE to our day list and we got to watch as Chestnut-backed Chickadees fed
recently fledged and begging young while DARK-EYED JUNCOS were spotted with
beaks jammed full of food.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
