All,
It was clear and breezy today at Alum Rock park. Shao Cheng and I found a
Great Horned Owl, likely on a nest, in a crevice in a rock wall past the
last parking area. I believe it nested here last year also. This is where
you come out at the southern end of the North Rim trail. While looking for
the Dipper we found some House Wrens investigating possible nest sights.
Two female C. Mergansers were sunning themselves on a rock in the creek.
Several Selasphorus Hummingbirds were heard only. Many noisy Rough winged
and Tree Swallows flying overhead. A calling Hairy Woodpecker was found in
a tall eucalyptus by Shao. A male Townsends Warbler was seen near the
rangers station.
Driving along Sierra Rd. we spotted our first Cassins Kingbird perched on
a fence. This came as quite a surprise to me, but we found two more
perched side by side further up the road with a pair of W. Bluebirds. A few
White throated Swifts and some Violet Green flying over the wildflower
dotted green hills. One Say's Phoebe, another Cassins Kingbird, male
Bluebird and Yellow billed Magpies were seen at the next stop. Four Horned
Larks were feeding near the road before the corral and an Am Pipit perched
on the fence here. I turned around when the road narrowed to one lane since
we'd found most of our target birds.
