All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I decided it was a good day to bird
Charcoal Rd from Skyline Blvd (Hwy. 35) to Table Mountain. The first bird we heard
as gathered up our equipment was a CASSIN'S VIREO. In the process of finding
the CAVI we spotted a male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD, a couple silent WARBLING
VIREOS, several ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES and
BUSHTITS. All within a couple hundred yards of the parked car. Within the first
quarter mile we added DARK-EYED JUNCO, BEWICK'S WREN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and
WILSON'S WARBLER. Other notables seen today include lots of TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS, a male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PINE
SISKINS, BROWN CREEPER, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, BAND-TAILED
PIGEONS, PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, PURPLE FINCHES, COOPER'S HAWK, NORTHERN
FLICKER, HUTTON'S VIREOS (heard only), HAIRY WOODPECKER, both JAYS, both TOWHEES
and WRENTIT. At one point we had what sounded like a flock of Pygmy
Nuthatches but we could not locate them and weren't sure that they might not be a
flock of Pine Siskins (although I haven't heard PISI doing the PYNU call
lately). We also had a possible Pileated Woodpecker calling west of Table
Mountain (no drumming). On our way home, near the CDF Fire Station, a SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK flew low across the road in front of us. Those interested in birding
Table Mountain need to know that it is 750 ft below Skyline Rd (that's 750
feet back uphill after several hours of hiking). See write-up in current
Birding at the Bottom of the Bay, pages 48-50. The Table Mountain trail adds a few
ups and downs to that vertical height gain (we take the road).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
