Hello SBBers,
I thought I would pass along some South County Cattle Egret history, based on the many recent sightings. It was only about three years ago that Cattle Egrets could be frequently found in cattle and diary feedlots in the Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy areas. About three years ago, during February, I counted at least four separate birds without any real effort. There could have easily been more.
About two years ago, however, our sightings just dried up. We would sift through small groups of Great and Snowy Egrets without success. It was not until the end of last year that we saw another one. In addition to the sightings reported here this year, back in February there had been reports of a number of Cattle Egrets as close as Los Banos.
Since the Cattle Egrets' foraging area is not quite as predictable as it once was, it may be the case that some changes in feedlot management have made most of those areas less attractive to them. Have any of you noticed this trend?
Linda Adams
