[SBB] Panoche Valley 3-13-05

Hi All

Although this is out-of-county, it could be of interest to SBBers. Mary and I
traveled to Panoche Valley the long way, via I-5, and were very glad we did.
Around 9:30, 1/4 mile East of the reservoir, just past where the horse and dog
trials were being held, Mary sighted two female CHUKAR foraging at the side
of the road. In the sage brush just off the road were three more with at least
one male present. Not your ordinary quail !!! Beautiful birds and a totally
unexpected lifer for both of us.

Also seen were LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, GOLDEN EAGLE, RAVEN, MEADOWLARK, TREE
SWALLOW, W. KINGBIRD, TRI-COLORED BLACKBIRD, RED BREASTED SAPSUCKER and YELLOW
BILLED MAGPIE.

By Panoche School we saw what we first thought was a Lark Sparrow, but it had
a black strip coming down from its beak to a strip across it's otherwise pale
chest, like an upside down "T". . It was hanging with Red Winged Blackbirds
forgaging in the mustard. We dodn't get good long looks, but the closest we
could come to an ID was a Lapland Longspur. It wasn't a House Sparrow - the
color and facial pattern was all wrong. It didn't have enough reddish on the face
to be a Lark Sparrow. Any thoughts, please.
