Folks:
This morning, 3/11/2005, I made a loop at Monte Bello, starting from the
Skid Road entrance. I started early so I could listen to the owls. I
heard 1-2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET and about 8 WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS before first
light. With dawn, two pairs of GREAT HORNED OWLS started calling and a
NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL gave single toots.
Before sunrise I started up the Indian Creek Trail from the Canyon Trail
junction. About 6:30 am I heard a PILEATED WOODPECKER in the canyon call
once. Above the big switchback, before the trail joins the chaparral
field, I had a pair of RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS in the grass above the
trail. I don't think they are there every year.
I returned to Page Mill by the Buena Vista Trail. I heard one RED
CROSSBILL call over the sag pond, but found none in the pines at the top of
the Canyon Trail. A couple of VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS appear to be on
territory there. Returning to the Skid Road Trail I found two WARBLING
VIREOS singing in the broadleaved evergreen forest.
Coming home, a pair of NOR. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS appear to have returned
to nest holes at the I-280 overpass over Page Mill Road.
