Hello,
I had only a few minutes on my way to work, but stopped along Highway 152
east of Gilroy at two pullouts to scan San Felipe Lake. The lake has
spilled from its perennial basin to the east, and it is holding a large
number of waterfowl -- several thousand. I was disappointed to see at least
three Mute Swans in the collection. During my very cursory scan, I found
nothing of particular note, but it's worth a closer look (which I certainly
intend to do as soon as opportunity presents itself). Seen: Yellow-billed
Magpie, Tree Swallow, Violet Green Swallow, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck,
Northern Pintail, Mallard, Ring-neck Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon,
American Coot, Canada Geese, American White Pelican, Common Yellowthroat,
Marsh Wren, Redwing and Brewer's Blackbird, Song Sparrow. Absent were the
Tundra Swans, Eurasian Wigeon and White-fronted Geese present on recent
visits, but as I said, my stop was very brief. The shallow, inundated area
to the east of the lake is certainly worth a look, and best viewed from
pullouts to the east of the blue call box that's often cited in reports.
Good birding,
Mark Paxton
