This evening Chris MacIntosh, Kay Partelow and I again looked
unsuccessfully for the Northern Waterthrush. This was our second
visit this week, and it was interesting to compare Sunday's late
morning birding with this evening's birding.
As expected, it was much quieter at dusk. We saw a BEWICKS WREN on
the concrete next to the pumphouse as a MUSKRAT swam in the water
below. When the pumps turned on, a MALLARD looked overjoyed to be in
a now-moving current. COMMON YELLOWTHROATS flitted in the reeds.
Many thanks to Dean Manley for showing us the two hummingbird nests.
That was a real treat!
We watched 2 COOPERS HAWKS high in the trees above the blue volleyball
net. One made several trips towards Charleston Road, the last time
with a mouthfull of twigs and then the other followed a bit later.
There must be a nest being built on the "other" end of the marsh
somewhere; darkness set in too quickly to investigate. We'll have to
keep an eye out the next time we go waterthrushing.
As we chatted in the dark by our cars Kay brought our attention to a
vociferous KILLDEER (that's right, Charadrius vociferus, let's see how
long I remember that!) flying somewhere between the parking lot trees
and nearby Stevens Creek.
Birds highlights from Sunday (3/6) just before noon: great view of a
LINCOLN'S SPARROW through Kay's scope, lots of noisy AMERICAN and
LESSER GOLDFINCH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, PINE SISKENS galore, a SORA
RAIL whinnying a foot or two away (or so it seemed; we couldn't see it
but it sure sounded close), and Mike Mammoser showed us a BUSHTIT
nest.
