Folks:
Have you wondered who James Cooper was or Charles Sibley? Did you know
that the Cooper Ornithological Society was formed in 1893 in San Jose? Or
that the kids that started the "Club" were a bunch of egg collectors trying
to figure out how to become ornithologists? What happened to all those egg
collectors anyway? And what was the Stanford connection? And the San Jose
State University connection?
Someday, when the Santa Clara County Breeding Bird Atlas is published,
there will be an appendix that covers a bit of our local history. Through
the courtesy of the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society (and Pete
LaTourrette, the web master), a draft of that appendix is now up and
installed on their web site. You can find it under "Publications" or use
the URL:
http://scvas.org/pdfs/APP5.pdf
If you are curious, please be warned that it is a 1.9 MB pdf file--it might
take some time to download depending upon your connection.
If you have comments on the draft appendix, please direct them to me at my
e-mail address, not SBB. Thanks.
Bill
