[SBB] some East Side birds

Hi All!
On Tuesday 3/1/05 at Lake Cunningham, the WISA was still present at her
favorite tree. The ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD that built her nest in the first big
pine as you drive into Parking Lot C has hatched a baby hummer! The baby's
bill is the not quite the length of its head, but its huge eyes were very
alert, and it watched me watching it. A pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS called back
and forth to each other, one sitting on a nest and one perched in a nearby
tree. The nest is just past parking lot B (on the way to parking lot C) on
the right in a sycamore across the road from some pines, right where the road
dips down.
At Alum Rock Park on Wednesday 3/2/05, I dipped on the Western
Screech-owl, but heard an AMERICAN DIPPER screeching. The dipper was trilling its
loud metallic call as it headed upstream. It didn't stop, and I didn't have
time to chase it (you can't cut class when you're the teacher!). Penitencia
Creek was really flowing yesterday! A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD--solid rust over the
head down to the tail--was perched on the dead snag on the left (as you drive
in) where the road widens and parking spaces are painted on either side.
Today 3/3/05 at Overfelt Gardens, a single NORTHERN FLICKER with yellow
under the wings and tail was perched in a tree with 4 red-shafted flickers.
There were also many NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS calling and flying around
both the biggest pond and the north-western pond (on which a single
RING-NECKED DUCK swam).
                                                            Take care!
                                                                Kim Blythe
                                                                Santa Clara
