This afternoon at 4:45 pm I spotted what I think was a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED
SPARROW at the Palo Alto Baylands. Take the Marsh Loop Bay Trail on the
west side of Charleston Slough about 1.2 miles to the northeast end of the
slough where there is a side trail leading to a flood gate that is blocked
by a black fence. The bird was in the pickleweed to the left (on the Bay
side) as you face the gate. It had a gray auricular patch surrounded by a
distinctively colored golden-orange triangle, streaked back and streaked
upper breast. Although there were 2 white-crowned sparrows nearby, it was
solitary and tended to stay low in the pickleweed, so I was able to only get
brief looks at its upper half from the side. After about 10 minutes it
buried itself in the pickleweed and didn't move.
