All,
This morning, based on a report by Ron Thorn of many Least Terns at Coyote
Point, Frank Vanslager and decided to check out Salt Pond A2E. Sure enough,
despite the early morning heat, we were able to find five adult LEAST TERNS
resting on the boardwalk that runs north and south in Salt Pond A2E. The LETE
were perched near FORSTER'S TERNS (nice size comparison) while a couple of
them made short flights to different parts of the boardwalk. None of the LETE
seemed to be feeding during the periods we spent observing them. We then
continued on to the mouth of Stevens Creek spotting a male CANVASBACK in the
creek on the way and two pair of BLACK SKIMMERS apparently nesting on the small
island in the northwest corner of Salt Pond B1 (only one pair nested here
last year). As expected there was little of interest at the mouth of the creek;
a maximum of 22 LEAST SANDPIPERS in one flock, a CASPIAN TERN flew over
heading west, a couple MARBLED GODWITS, several LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, lots of
WILLETS, and AMERICAN AVOCETS. On the way back we had an adult PEREGRINE FALCON
on a power tower on Salt Pond B1 and two BROWN PELICANS flew nearby (actually
a county year bird for me). Good numbers of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were
in both ponds and on the dike in between.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
