[SBB] redstart?

Hi,
This may be a red herring instead, since I am not a very experienced
birder, but I believe I may have seen an American Redstart in Sunnyvale,
yesterday at 1:38PM.

I saw the bird from a levy at the southern part of pond A4, across the
creek from the softball fields, very near a pedestrian bridge that
crosses the creek. It was in the rushes in the creek.

It was a nearly featureless brownish grey bird about the size and shape
of a yellow-rumped warbler. However, it had a subtle yellow wash
forward of its wings (I think of armpits) and on the tail, I think on
the outside only. I thought it might be a yellow rump, but the rump was
not yellow.

It was moving through the reeds about a foot above the water in the
channel. It was taking little leaps within the reeds from a few inches
to 2 feet at a time. I only had about 5 minutes of viewing before I
lost it while looking through my book.

Looking through Sibley's last night, the redstart seems the best fit for
plumage and motion. But it would be rare here, and was not in a
broadleaf habitat: two big strikes.

Does anyone have a suggestion of a better candidate?
