Hi all -
Last May 18 I posted my observation of an AMERICAN DIPPER on the Los Gatos Creek trail just out of Los Gatos and off the Main Street Bridge. This section of creek is close to the freeway as it parallels 17. If you had a good arm you could hit a car with a fast ball.
Mike Rogers wrote me yesterday to ask me more specifics on this sighting. Guess it may be a first for the area.
So I went back to the same section of creek today. I was there at the same time as when I was there 5 weeks ago (5:00 PM) and there came the American Dipper! Today's bird was a juvenile. We watched it feed for almost 30 minutes before we left.
This bird was feeding at the waters edge along the cemented area of creek about 1/4 mile up the creek from the Main Street Bridge. There's a kiosk off the trail, next to the creek with #67 painted on the side. From this vantage point you can easily see up and down the creek. There are several man-made waterfalls along this section of creek. The dipper appears to like this section. Those waterfalls appear emulate the type of habitat this species prefers.
I was also able to photograph the bird today.
Lisa
