Their seasonal
movement, or presence, is not very well understood. If there was a
significant number (are there any?) of records of their presence in
winter locally, we might more easily accept that they are present
year-round and are just undetectable during winter in this area. Such
is the case for many nocturnal, cryptically-marked species.
I certainly agree there are aspects of this species' occurrence in our
region that are not well understood at all. But, for what it is worth, over here
on the coastal slope in Santa Cruz Co. and in the Loma Prieta vicinity there
are a number of records spanning the period of late Oct through Feb., and some
of them are of multiple birds. There have been apparent spikes in activity
during odd winter warm spells (such as I recall observing near Loma Prieta).
On the other hand, some records have been of birds observed during very cold
periods, even during the big freeze of Dec 1991! So I'm not sure how local
temperatures play into it. It could be that there are relatively few winter
records locally because the species does not call as much then, and there are
fewer folks visiting the areas where they may occur.
I am of the opinion that we have a resident component to our population in
the Santa Cruz Mountains region. Don Roberson indicates that the Monterey
population (at least in the Santa Lucia Mountains) is also thought to be
resident, and there is other interesting info in the species account in book his
Monterey Birds.
