Today Peter Doyle and I saw the AMERICAN DIPPER above the 4th bridge
from the intersection of Mt. Eden Rd. and Steven Creek Canyon Rd.
It was approx. 50 yrds above the bridge with the creek in the right
side. It was very cooperative. We watched it catch moths and butterflies
and then it landed on a rock and preened for quite awhile. It stayed in
the same area for ~30 min before it flew back downstream. I also saw a
PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER along the creek between bridges 3 and 4 where
the big rocks are along the creek.
Later, while at the Chestnut picnic area where the road loops back
around, we saw 2 BROWN CREEPERS, heard at least 2 PURPLE FINCHES (thanks
to Phyllis Swanson for pointing them out), many WARBLING VIREOS both
seen and heard, 3 SPOTTED TOWHEES were foraging on the ground in the
picnic area, 2 OAK TITMOUSE in the trees and lots of DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
Also, a pesky Stellers Jay immitating a red-shoulded hawk, but he didn't
fool us.
Happy birding,
Summer Brasuel
