[SBB] weekend birds... (and flickr and photos)

A few weekend birds from around the neighborhood...

We've had some hooded orioles move in during the last week (finally) and are using the feeder. I've seen a male and female, and I believe a third bird, also a male. We also now have a couple of hummers arguing over the feeder as well.

While working out in the yard Saturday, we had a flock of wrentits wander in, work their way through the tree and local bushes, then wander off again.

Unusual stuff going on: saturday, I had a family of barn swallows visit the yard (probably from Central park) -- I've seen swallows occasionally near the flood control channels, but never here in the neighborhood. There were at least five individuals, including one kid just about finished molting away from the fluff. They happily sat around and sunned themselves, ignoring me UNTIL I went for the camera, at which point they laughed and flew off (twice).

Laurie and I have both been hearing woodpeckers working the neighborhood, but haven't seen them yet. This isn't normal for this time of year, we generally get them migrating through, but I haven't heard them this time of year.

I've got pictures of the oriole and wrentit on my flickr account:

(flickr is a nice photo upload service, with both free and paid options -- and the free accounts are quite usable. If you're looking for a place to put photos, it's one I can strongly recommend).

If you use flickr, I've created a global tag "south bay birds" you can use. If you do, it'll be available to all users on that tag:

and just for general amusement, here's the URL to the stream of all of my bird pictures, some of which actually don't suck.

(if you understand what "RSS" means, all of these feeds can also be watched via RSS...)
