[SBB] Palo Alto SBC - 4 Jun 2005

Folks:

I covered the Mountain View Forebay, Shoreline Lake, Salt Ponds A1 and A2W, and the light industrial areas NE of Hwy 101 yesterday, 6/4/2005, for the Palo Alto Summer Bird Count, mostly on bicycle.

I covered the light industrial area NE of 101, but found only typical light industrial birds.

There were no ibis in the forebay before sunrise, so I assume they roost elsewhere, perhaps in the Flood Control Basin. However, by seven both the adult and 1st-summer WHITE-FACED IBIS were feeding busily.

Shoreline Lake had its usual complement of oversummering ducks: the male GREATER SCAUP and seven SURF SCOTERS (last week I noted that two of these birds appeared to fly strongly, however, most of these birds are injured and cannot fly). I saw two adult GREEN HERONS along with three nestlings in the weeping willows on the north shore of Shoreline. The nestlings are highly ambulatory now and scramble through the branches to hide if one comes close, but will come out to look for their next meal if you stay at scoping distance. They should fly in a few days.

I rode around Salt Pond A1 and counted CALIFORNIA GULL nests and young on the northwest island (44 birds still on nests, 184+ precocial young). I had two PEREGRINE FALCONS on the outer part of A1, but no sign of nesting. For the day, I had 44 AM. WHITE PELICANS on A1 and another 7 on A2W--no big flocks yet.

I rode around A2W and the best birds were an oversummering EARED GREBE and, off the Stevens Creek mouth, a male CANVASBACK that I shared with Mike Mammoser who was on the opposite bank. I finished up with some miscellaneous areas in Shoreline Park, but just found more miscellaneous birds.
